Public Notes:
At twenty-one (21) schools there are approximately one hundred and ninety nine (199) openings (Doors, windows, side-lites, etc) in the defining walls of the existing tornado areas of refuge. These openings will be replaced, created, modified or provided with devices to enhance the performance of these openings during a potential tornado event. The scope of work for these openings ranges from simple door labeling to the complete demolition of an opening and the surrounding walls as required for the reconstruction and reconfiguration of that opening. The majority of the openings will require replacing the existing door slab with a 16 guage hollow metal door including a small vision kit to be provided with special three-point latching hardware or panic hardware, vertical rods top and bottom, and attaching the door slab to the existing frame with a continous hinge. Where posible, existing hardware will be salvaged and reused on the new slabs. Of the one hundred and ninety nine (199) openings, five (5) will be new door and frame assemblies in new masonry wall construction. At existing window openings including both interior and exterior openings, special impact-rated glazing systems will be installed in special and / or the special glazing will be installed into existing or new hollow metal frames.

At two (2) schools, the existing tornado areas of refuge are within basement areas. As a means of improving ventilation of these spaces during tornado drills and actual tornado events, air will be pulled or pushed into the areas of refuge by means of fans, ductwork, and transfer grills. The installation of these systems will require selective demolition (penetration) of masonry walls, concrete walls. gypsum board walls, structural slabs and roof assenblies as well as removal/modification of flooring, wall base, ceilings, lights, conduit and other misc. items to accommodate new construction. New mechanical chases will be constructed using standard 6" and 8" CMU as well as decorative CMU to match existing. All roofing shall be coordinated with the district's roofing contractor.

All surfaces exposed or new shall be finished to match existing surrounding surfaces. These surfaces include but are not limited to resinous flooring and resinous wall base, VCT tile flooring, rubber wall base, various paint types and colors, suspended ceiling grid systems and suspended gypsum plaster ceiling systems.
